supplemental Security Income letterhead-logo

Supplemental Security Income is a benefit given by Social Security to claimants who don’t qualify for SSDI or Social Security Disability Income.

SSI v. SSDI

The main difference between the two systems is whether you have a work history in the past 5 years or not. If you have worked in the last 5 years you should be able to qualify for SSDI.  There is a number of minimum credits you must have to qualify for this benefit). We will discuss more about this in a future post.

Those who don’t have enough work history, but still meet certain financial guidelines, should be able to qualify for SSI.

Both systems follow the same set of rules when it comes to the medical evidence to prove disability.

You cannot file for SSI online. It must be filed in person or over the phone.
